Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi, Story of Nirjala Ekadashi.

निर्जला एकादशी

Ekadashi fasting is considered to be the most prevalent among the Hindu caste. According to the scriptures, the fruit of Ekadashi fasting, health, longevity, complete happiness and finally salvation has been done in this world. For Vaishnavas, there is an order for fasting for the planets only on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha. But eating food is prohibited on the Ekadashi of both the sides. Milk and fruits should be eaten in infirm condition. One should eat milk, water or fruits at one time when fasting is also attached. So the fast is not broken. Dashami Vida Ekadashi should be fasted. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year. But out of all this, Jishta Shukla Ekadashi is considered to be the most fruitful. Because by observing this fast for one Ekadashi, one gets the result of fasting for the whole year. In this Ekadashi, it is called Nirjala Ekadashi due to the law of taking water without water from the sunrise of Ekadashi till the sunset of Dwadashi. This fast is extremely restrained. The days are very long in Jeshtha month. And the thirst is even more. Keeping such a difficult fast in such a condition is really a work of great spiritual practice, this fast is completed with pain and endurance. After completing the fast according to the rules, according to the power, there is a law to donate food, clothes, umbrella, fruits and a urn containing gold and water. Maharishi Vyas himself has told the glory of this Ekadashi with his own mouth.
Story of Nirjala Ekadashi Once
Bhimsen told Vyasji that O father! Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, Kunti and Draupati all do not eat food on Ekadashi and tell me the same thing, O Bhimsen! Do not eat food on Ekadashi. The only thing I tell them is that I cannot bear hunger. I will donate lawfully. And by worshiping Lord Vasudeva, I will please him. But how can I get the result of fasting on Ekadashi without fasting?
Vyasji said – O Vrikodar, if you love heaven and you do not want to go to hell, then you should not eat on the Ekadashis of both the sides.
Bhimsen said – O father, I cannot survive even with one meal. The fire named Vrika is always burning in my stomach. My hunger is satisfied only after eating a lot of food.
O Muniraj! Tell me one such fast, due to which my welfare is done, I will definitely do it lawfully.
Vyasji said – do a waterless fast on Jeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, take a bath – there is no fault of taking water in Achaman. If a mother is immersed in water as much as a gold gem, such a person is said to purify the body. Do not eat food at all. Eating food breaks the fast. Always keep fast on Ekadashi. This will remove your sin of eating food on all Ekadashis. Along with this, the virtue of fasting on Ekadashis of the whole year will be obtained. From that day Bhimsen started fasting on this Ekadashi. That is why it is also called Bhimsen Ekadashi.
